Hong Kong Pop Star CoCo Lee Passes Away at Age 48

Popular singer CoCo Lee, known for her performances at the Academy Awards and as the Mandarin voice of Mulan, tragically passed away at the age of 48. Her sisters confirmed the heartbreaking news on Instagram, revealing that CoCo had been battling depression for several years, with her condition worsening in recent months. Despite seeking professional help and fighting against her depression, she succumbed to her inner struggles.

CoCo Lee was born in Hong Kong and received education in both China and the United States. She began her singing career three decades ago, primarily in the Mandopop genre. CoCo worked tirelessly to create new opportunities for Chinese singers in the international music scene, becoming a shining star for her fellow Chinese artists. She also lent her voice to the Mandarin version of the beloved Disney film Mulan in 1998.

One of CoCo’s memorable moments was her performance at the 2001 Academy Awards, where she sang “A Love Before Time” from the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The English version of the song received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, while the Mandarin version, composed by Tan Dun, won the Best Original Film Song at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Following her success, CoCo continued to make significant contributions to the Chinese pop music industry.
