John Cena shared how he landed a role in the upcoming live-action film Barbie, starring Margot Robbie. During an appearance on Today, Cena revealed that it was a chance encounter with Robbie that led to his casting as a merman in the movie.
Cena explained that while filming Fast X, which takes place across the street from the Barbie set, he approached Robbie and expressed his interest in being part of the film. He emphasized the similarities between the casts of Barbie and Fast X, and asked if there was a possibility for him to join.

According to Cena, Robbie asked him if he would be interested in playing a merman, to which he enthusiastically agreed. Singer Dua Lipa was previously announced as a mermaid Barbie in the movie.
Cena mentioned that he hadn’t worked with Robbie before, but they randomly ran into each other as friends while filming in close proximity. He expressed his eagerness to be involved in the project and stated that he would do whatever was needed.

Interestingly, Cena had previously auditioned for the role but was initially rejected. However, he remained determined and continued pursuing the opportunity. He believes that every chance, no matter how small, is valuable for showcasing skills and developing new ones.
Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, revolves around Robbie’s character experiencing an existential crisis in Barbie Land and embarking on a journey to the Real World. The star-studded cast includes Ryan Gosling as Ken, as well as Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, and Ncuti Gatwa portraying different versions of Barbies and Kens. Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, and Emerald Fennell also have roles in the film.
Barbie is set to release on July 21, and Cena’s unexpected role as a merman adds to the anticipation surrounding the movie.
