Josh Gad assures fans that he had the approval of Robin Williams’ estate to portray Genie in a posthumous performance.
In an upcoming animated short film produced by Disney to celebrate their 100th anniversary, Josh Gad will reprise his role as Olaf from “Frozen” alongside the beloved character Genie, originally voiced by the late Robin Williams in the film “Aladdin.” The animated short will feature previously unreleased dialogue of Williams voicing Genie.
After facing some backlash over the announcement, Gad took to Instagram to address the concerns. He emphasized that he would never participate in such a project without the proper consent from Robin Williams’ estate. Gad expressed his deep admiration for Williams and reassured fans that he had received the necessary approval and support to bring Genie back to the screen.
Gad shared a picture on social media depicting Genie emerging from an artist’s sketchbook and sharing a smile with Olaf. He expressed his immense joy and even admitted to being moved to tears upon learning that these two characters would be sharing the screen in the animated short film titled “Once Upon A Studio.”
The news of the collaboration was unveiled during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where the special animation was showcased for the first time. The nine-minute short film not only brings together Genie and Olaf but also features over 400 other Disney characters, including classics like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Moana, Merlin, Tiana, and Goofy.
According to reports, the short film captures the playful and comedic antics of the characters as they navigate the Roy E Disney animation building, resulting in gentle chaos. To maintain authenticity, over 40 original voice actors returned to lend their voices to the characters, ensuring a nostalgic and delightful experience for fans.
The collaboration between Josh Gad and Robin Williams’ Genie serves as a heartfelt tribute to both the iconic character and the late actor. By incorporating previously unheard recordings of Williams’ voice, the film allows his portrayal of Genie to continue captivating audiences and preserving his enduring legacy.
The animated short not only celebrates the creative genius of Robin Williams but also pays homage to Disney Animation’s century-long history. Fans can look forward to this unique crossover and rejoice in the opportunity to witness the magic that unfolds when these beloved characters come together on screen once again.
