Lady Gaga Preferred ‘Lee’ Name on Joker Sequel Set, DP Reveals: ‘Didn’t Know Stefani Well’

Lady Gaga, the Oscar-winning songwriter and actress, is making headlines again for her method acting approach on the set of the upcoming Joker sequel, titled “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Gaga, who is known for fully immersing herself in her roles, reportedly requested to be called “Lee” during the filming of her character, DC Comics villain Harley Quinn. According to Lawrence Sher, the film’s cinematographer, this name change played a significant role in enhancing their working relationship and fostering a better connection between them.

In a recent interview with The Trenches podcast, Sher revealed that initially, he felt a disconnect with Gaga, not really getting to know her despite spending time during makeup and hair tests. He described feeling like they were on opposite ends and struggled to connect with her on a deeper level. This led to Sher being reserved and not saying much to Gaga during the early days of filming, apart from giving minor instructions to the crew.

However, everything changed when an assistant director suggested that Sher call Gaga “Lee” on set. Embracing the suggestion, Sher immediately started addressing her as “Lee,” and surprisingly, it had a transformative effect on their relationship. He noted that the moment he used the name “Lee,” their connection shifted dramatically, and from that point on, they had a much more profound bond. The simple change in addressing Gaga as “Lee” brought about a significant improvement in their collaboration, allowing them to work together more effectively.

Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, is known for her remarkable talent as a singer, songwriter, and actress.
