Olivia Rodrigo Begins a New Era and Confronts a ‘Fame-Seeker’ in ‘Vampire’ Song

Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo, known for her hit song “Drivers License,” is back with a new single called “Vampire” from her upcoming album titled “Guts.” In an interview with Rolling Stone, Rodrigo shared the story behind the song and its connection to her personal experiences.

The idea for “Vampire” had been brewing in Rodrigo’s mind for some time. She kept a list of potential song titles in a Notes App, and “Vampire” was one of them. One day, after going through a situation that made her angry, she sat down at the piano and started playing chords that had a gothic feel to them. It was at that moment that the song began to pour out of her.

Rodrigo explained that she was drawn to the vampire theme because of its rich lore and symbolism. The lyrics explore the concept of someone draining her emotionally, comparing them to a fame-hungry energy vampire. The song starts as a piano ballad, reminiscent of her previous hit “Drivers License,” but gradually builds into a more intense and fast-paced pop anthem.

The accompanying music video for “Vampire” was directed by Petra Collins, who also worked on Rodrigo’s previous visuals for “Good 4 U” and “Brutal.” The video was shot at night in downtown LA, incorporating subtle vampire references without being too obvious.

Interestingly, Olivia Rodrigo is a self-proclaimed fan of the Twilight series. She has expressed her love for the vampire romance franchise in the past, making the vampire-inspired world of “Vampire” a bit of wish fulfillment for her. However, she clarified that her posts about Twilight were not early hints about the song; she simply enjoys sharing her love for the series.

While it maintains the essence of her previous work, Rodrigo found it fresh and exciting, signaling growth and progression in her music.

The song’s production highlights Rodrigo’s affinity for dynamic shifts in music. She explained that her favorite songs are those that seamlessly transition between quiet and loud moments, creating an emotional impact. The intensity of the music mirrors the anger and frustration she felt during the experience that inspired the song.

“Vampire” provides a glimpse into Rodrigo’s personal journey and the challenges she faced. It contains incisive details about the person who betrayed her, referencing “six months of torture” and suggesting that the individual might be older with the line “girls your age know better.” The song serves as a cathartic outlet for Rodrigo to express her emotions and connect with her audience.
