Robert De Niro recently shared his thoughts on his character in the film Killers of the Flower Moon, drawing comparisons to former U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking at a press conference during the Cannes Film Festival in France, the acclaimed actor discussed his struggle to connect with the role of William Hale in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming movie, which tells the story of the mysterious murders of Osage tribe members in 1920s Oklahoma.
De Niro admitted, “I don’t understand a lot about my character.” He explained that Hale had to be charismatic and win people over, but there was also a sense of entitlement and betrayal towards the Osage people. The 79-year-old actor pointed out the “banality of evil” and emphasized the need to remain vigilant against it. Although he did not explicitly mention Trump’s name, he made a veiled reference to the controversial politician, labeling him as “stupid.”

Referring to the character of Hale, De Niro remarked, “Imagine if you’re smart. Even Hale was smart in many ways. It’s something that is systemic, and that’s the scary part of it. The whole thing is there… you’ve got to really keep your eye on it.” However, De Niro couldn’t resist expressing his disdain for Trump, stating, “I mean, look with Trump. There are people who still think he can do a good job. Imagine that? How insane that is. That’s all I’ll say.”
The representatives of Donald Trump have not responded to De Niro’s comments at the time of writing.
