The director of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, one of this month’s highly acclaimed animated films, has made a promise to fans of the beloved character Spider-Ham. In an interview with Collider, co-director Joaquim Dos Santos addressed the limited appearance of Spider-Ham in the latest sequel and revealed that the lovable anthropomorphic pig will have a significant role in the upcoming film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, set to release in 2024.
Dos Santos explained that due to time constraints, some scenes involving Spider-Ham had to be cut from the current film. However, he assured fans that the joy of seeing the characters back together will be fulfilled in the next installment. Dos Santos emphasized that the promise of more Spider-Ham was an integral part of the storyline and the team wanted to deliver on that expectation.
Spider-Ham, voiced by John Mulaney, was first introduced in the 2018 Oscar-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Hailing from Earth-8311, Spider-Ham has a unique backstory. He started as a spider who was bitten by a radioactive pig, transforming him into the superhero known as Spider-Ham.
Although Spider-Ham takes a back seat in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, he is shown as a member of Gwen Stacy’s new team towards the end of the film. As a close friend and ally of Miles Morales, it is expected that Spider-Ham will play a more significant role in the sequel, considering the challenges that Miles faces.
While discussing the progress of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Dos Santos described the current state of production as chaotic. He mentioned that breaking the rules and pushing boundaries has been a defining aspect of the Spider-Verse films, and the team is determined to continue challenging conventions in the upcoming installment. Despite the chaos, Dos Santos expressed confidence in their ability to deliver a groundbreaking and unique experience for the audience.
Fans of the Spider-Verse franchise can still enjoy the brilliance of the current sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which has garnered critical acclaim. The film follows Miles Morales as he reunites with Gwen Stacy and embarks on a journey across the Multiverse, encountering a team of Spider-People tasked with protecting their existence. However, when disagreements arise among the heroes on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against his fellow Spider-People. He must redefine his understanding of heroism to save the people he loves.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, the screenplay for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham. The film features an ensemble cast including Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released on March 29, 2024. Fans eagerly anticipate the next chapter in the Spider-Verse saga, hoping to see more of their favorite characters, including the delightful Spider-Ham.
